Possible not to sound so serious when writing academic papers?
Q. Ask this question on yahoo answers: I've always been frustrated by how serious and boring I sound when writing research papers and English essays (especially English essays). When writing other things, say a humor article or narrative, I love the way I sound. Can someone relate their own experiences with this or point me somewhere where I can read some well written, and presumably light-hearted, academic papers? Or is it necessarily impossible to come off light-hearted in any kind of analytical stuff? Thanks

A. I'm a big fan of the witty aside in academic papers. It's risky, but every professor I've had has made a point of letting me know how much they've enjoyed reading my papers. As long as it's technically well written, I think you should go ahead with the intellectual humor. Professors are surprisingly receptive to it.

I need pages (dictionaries and such) that I can quote for in academic papers?
Q. I need to look up some stuff in a dictionary or thesaurus and I'd like to quote from it because it's for an academic paper but I don't know any pages that it's ok to quote from. Not wikipedia or any such pages. I need trustworthier ones. :) Thanks in advance! It's related to literature but I need a simple dictionary. Because I want to take the words out of their context.

A. What subject is your paper on? If nobody knows that, how can you expect someone to give you an authoritative source of information. In the course of writing your paper (whatever your chosen topic), you will have to read information. You can compare and contract that new information with what you already know. Only at that point can you reliably say whether it is suitable or not, or indeed trustworthy. Edit: All student papers are related to literature. Where else do you think the information comes from? A small part of hands-on experimentation is backed up by (hopefully) a massive variety of available research topics. The marks assigned rely on the quality, validity and relevance of that research on your topic, plus the clarity… [cont.]

A. Foremost, it makes it easier to cite in-text references; you don't have to worry about footnotes running over to the next page, or adjusting your pagination when you need to consider endnotes (there are none). Second, you can cite multiple sources and references by just separating them using a semicolon for a given citation (where there are many sources worth citing or referring to). Third, there is no need to distract the reader with footnotes or endnotes, hence he/she can read the paper with continuity.

Asked by teresadick30 - Mon Mar 19 08:57:49 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. APA is great simply because you can use footnotes. I love them! If you need to check your source, just look at the bottom of the page and it is right there. If you have Word or Works, you can even insert footnotes using the program, and will never have to worry about renumbering them or font size (it will automattically renumber them if you throw one in before ones that you had already put in) The things I don't like about APA... I would have to say the several different types of materials you have to cite. Books, books with more than one author, periodicals, encyclopedias, electronic sources, etc. All slightly different, which makes it annoying. (but hey, its the same with any formatting style)

A. APA is americal psychological association. It is generally used for psychology-related papers. It is used because a) it makes sure you cite sources properly so you do not plagarize and b)if it were to be turned into a psychology article it would need to be in that format. Generally MLA is used when its not for a psychology subject.

How do you get an academic paper published?
Q. Let's say you did an analysis paper in grad school, and it got a perfect grade and good remarks from the prof. Can you publish it? Shouldn't you try? Not necessarily to sell, just as a reference material. How do academic papers get published? I'm under the general impression that publications are generally for selling. But I know a lot of important papers that never see more than 10,000 copies circulated, so that can't be the whole story - value of the contribution to the academic community must trump marketability.
Asked by M - Fri Jun 11 18:23:30 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First you must check if your material is genuinely original and that the analysis you provide is insightful and erudite. Speak to your teacher/professor etc. Then send it to a University and ask them what they think. If the scholarly academics are impressed they would promote it to be published. Answer mine?

A. You should never use information in an academic paper that is not supported through an extensive reference list or independent research. For instance, you should not use a website (no matter how official it looks) if it does not provide a reference for the information. It's always best to stick to things such as academic journals and literary books when writing an academic paper.

A. I make my students do an "Annotated Bibliography" which is an evaluation of their sources. That's one way to decide which is best to use, and helps you keep your sources straight. One way to keep focused on material that you actually need is to have a rough Outline - and of course your thesis statement. If something does NOT support your Thesis then do not use it. Something else to keep in mind is to use sources that are not biased and not too old, and that are credible (reputable sources). Whenever possible, go to the Primary source (where it was originally published) for instance, the _New England Journal of Medicine_. A. Oh my lord, you copied that right form your assingment didn't you? The "not mentioned in resource information" statment kind of gives that away. Where's the resource information and how am I to suggest something that is not in there if I have no idea what it is! Are we talking about things like abstract, table of contents, etc? If so I would say that the abstract and works cited are more important to an academic paper than a business document. Your summary and recommendations are important for both. Your introductions are important to both, but when it comes down to the abstract and works cited of a proposal or paper, academics will pay more attention to your methods than perhaps business.
