Possible not to sound so serious when writing academic papers?
Q. Ask this question on yahoo answers: I've always been frustrated by how serious and boring I sound when writing research papers and English essays (especially English essays). When writing other things, say a humor article or narrative, I love the way I sound. Can someone relate their own experiences with this or point me somewhere where I can read some well written, and presumably light-hearted, academic papers? Or is it necessarily impossible to come off light-hearted in any kind of analytical stuff? Thanks

A. I'm a big fan of the witty aside in academic papers. It's risky, but every professor I've had has made a point of letting me know how much they've enjoyed reading my papers. As long as it's technically well written, I think you should go ahead with the intellectual humor. Professors are surprisingly receptive to it.
