What academic programs would be suitable for a TV/Film industry career?
Q. I want to work in the entertainment industry in the future, be it TV or in movies; video editing, production, studio crew even. What kinds of degree course could let me try all of these out? Or even if it's not film related, what kind of good course would be great for this kind of media stuff?
Asked by Andy - Sun Jul 26 12:35:03 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The film industry does not require you to even have a degree, so unless you need to be spoon fed a film education I'd not recommend a film degree if you want to go into the film industry unless you have researched it and feel you would benefit-- it'd be a giant waste of money otherwise. That said, I needed to be spoon fed because I needed the networking opportunities going to a film school would have given me because I had no idea how to get started by myself. :P There's no shame in going and getting the degree if you want it or feel you need it, but you can't expect it to give you a leg up in this case. They don't care if you have a degree, only about what you can do. It's one of very few industries based on damn near talent and skill… [cont.]

A. Hey there~ I'm going to Japan with AFS for my sophomore year. AFS, YFU, ASSE, and Rotary are the safest programs. They all offer PARTIAL scholarships. Since AFS, YFU, and ASSE tend to be a little on the expensive side, Rotary is probably your best bet. Not many students get their first choice of country, but some, although very few, do. Rotary is much more affordable and your Rotary district gives you a monthly allowance while abroad (usually around $100). However, Rotarians, unlike students with other programs, switch host families every few months, as to get a fuller view of the country. This is not a bad thing, but some people aren't too fond of all the switching, so I was just letting you know. You can't apply for this year anymore, so… [cont.]

A. If she's out of high school, look at universities in your state. Some offer extensive programs to help young parents get through--all day daycare, on-campus apartment complexes (that get charged to bursars accounts per-semester and are eligible for financial aid, unlike off-campus apartments), and various other services. I don't know of any services that will provide you with this information, so just try calling admissions offices and seeing what they offer. Good luck!

I'm choosing between 3 online/hybrid academic doctorate programs. Please see details and advice.?
Q. I'm seeking to pursue an academic doctorate but I cannot pursue the traditional B & M format. Now, I'm choosing between an online PhD in Health Sciences (Educator track) from Touro University International (a purely online institution), an online PhD in Health Sciences (Health Professions Education specialization) from UMDNJ (a B & M institution), and an online EdD in Health Care Education from Nova Southeastern University. Evidently, I'll have to consider costs, credits and degree requirements, reputation of each program. Has anyone graduated from any of these programs? Any advice? Thanks so far. I'm considering the PhD in Health Sciences with UMDNJ. It's not an online PhD but offers a flexible format. Besides, I'm geographically near NJ… [cont.]

A. I would be wary of those purely 'online schools' as most employers don't find them to be reputable curriculums including university of phoenix, kaplan university, strayer u and devry u. Perhaps you would be better off with a major college or university that happens to offer online courses.

A. Your reference librarian will be able to help you. You won't find it on the internet. But each industry publishes two or three journals -- these are magazines that come out monthly, quarterly or semi-annually. The journals for the media industry have that information in them. They give the number of people surveyed, what method of survey was used, what the raw numbers were and what the cross-tabs are (cross tabs are a fancy name for results). These numbers are all broken down into each category you mentioned. Btw. these journals are a gold mine, people in the industry or profession, say psychiatry send in papers to be published, the old publish or perish rule. They are a gold mine for professors because we catch students who… [cont.]

Academic rewards programs?
Q. Hello everyone. I am trying to think of some good ideas for academic rewards programs for my school. To clarify, this is when students recieve say a 3.8 GPA or better, they get something at the end of the quarter or semester for continually holding that GPA. What we use to do is if you recieved an A in a class for two semesters, you were excluded from taking semester finals. The board of directors don't want that anymore, so hence lies my problem. I need to come up with some ideas on how to rewards the efforts of these students. Anyone got any ideas? I don't care how dumb they are, please help!

A. Recognition is always good. A large showing of individuals who have made the honor roll or such. I wouldn't concern myself with that much, however. Excellence should be it's own reward. Oh, there's also the option of honor study hall. Those individuals who have made the honor roll (If this is a high school) don't have to go to the regular study hall room. They can take study hall in the student lounge, or wherever.

A. You can see if either of the programs ranks. Check the classes and see what's the difference in the programs. If you see that one leans in what you want to do. Contact the colleges and see if you can talk to current students and see if students like the program.

Asked by Baloneyus_Monk - Sat Mar 8 05:42:37 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm assuming you mean a high school diploma. Yes, the college I go to allows you to take courses towards an AA or AS while attending high school or working towards your GED. You can't get any financial aid other than loans during this period, though. I'm guessing that a lot of community colleges have programs like this. You'll have to call them directly though. If you're in Indiana, you should check out Ivy Tech Community College, that's where I go.

whats the difference between an academic program and occupational program offered in college?
Q. Is one better than the other, or will one get me a better job?
Asked by tumblingtumblers - Sun Aug 20 02:02:18 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. One usually has a choice between academic programs and occupational programs only at community colleges. 4-year colleges generally only offer academic programs. Academic programs include majors like English, Anthropology, Economics, Chemistry, Geology, Art History, etc. Occupational programs include majors like lab tech, med tech, nursing assistant, medical transcription, massage therapy, computer software, secretarial/administrativ e assistant, etc. What will get you a better job? It depends on what sort of job you want. Do keep in mind that occupational programs generally only offer the option of an associate's degree, but an associate's degree will suffice for the jobs they are intended to prepare you for. Four year programs… [cont.]
