Can boredom and acedia be used interchangly?
Q. Can boredom and acedia be used interchangly?
Asked by CharlotteTripp - Fri Mar 13 19:58:32 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. "At its Greek root, acedia means the absence of care, and in personal terms it means refusing to care, even that you can't care. It is a supreme form of indifference, a kind of spiritual morphine: you know the pain is there, but can't rouse yourself to give a damn." I suppose it depends on the context. Bored as in not caring at all for a particular subject/instance - yes. Bored as in nothing to do - no.

How do I write to author Kathleen Norris?
Q. She wrote Cloister Walk, Dakota, Acedia & Me, Amazing Grace, etc. How does one usually contact an author? Through their publisher? I just want to write her a note about how I appreciate her latest book. Thanks!
Asked by katelynallen - Tue Sep 16 22:29:25 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Does she have an official website? Most authors do, and usually they have a link on their website to contact them. I once wrote author Jennifer Fallon about her trilogy (The Second Sons trilogy) to tell her that I really enjoyed her books and how well the characters were developed. I emailed her through her contact form and she actually wrote back. I still have that email somewhere. I would pull up Yahoo! or Google and do a search for "Kathleen Norris official site". I hope that helps!

A. The Seven Deadly Sins: avaritia = greed, avarice acedia = not in my dictionary gula = literally throat, metaphorically gluttony ira = anger, wrath invidia = envy, jealousy superbia = haughtiness, pride luxuria = luxury, extravagance sloth = segnitia, desidia, ignavia, socordia, inertia It was towards 400 AD when Jerome gave us the Bible in Latin, so "acedia" could be too new a word for my dictionary. It is a plausible formation from cedo = go, walk hence acedia = not going.

A. Canto VII, Fifth Circle, where in the swamp-like water of the river Styx, the wrathful fight each other on the surface, and the sullen or slothful lie gurgling beneath the water. Acedia is more commonly known as sloth, one of the seven deadly sins as first defined by Gregory the Great. To quote Dorothy Sayers describing the characteristics of the life characterized by this sin: "it is the [one] who believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is nothing for which it will die."

A. if the kids are to grow in Cyech republic, they'll be having bad times with their names. i recommend either picking full czech or full foreign names (depending on the name of father - i expect you are using husband's surname and taht he's of different culture (greek?) Alois is extremely outdated name for a boy. Bara is fine, yet there is plenty of them right now. Anyway, the variant you picked will NOT be accepted by the birth office. furthermore, think of her being an adult lady, still using a variant of name for a 3 years old.

Christians: How to deal with apathy?
Q. The early Church called it acedia: "...signifying profound indifference and inability to care about things that matter, even to the extent that you no longer care that you can't care." "Acedia offers a false sense of complacency and security. We can care about celebrities or online 'friends' more than our neighbors; we can treat rampant homelessness as 'just the way things are,' and that relieves us from having to do anything about it." (Kathleen Norris) It means settling for mediocrity. How do we avoid it? (Thx to Mizz Z.)
Asked by Jon M dn p s s - Fri Apr 9 12:09:53 2010 - - 18 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's hard to care about others when we are so self absorbed. Unless something directly affects our situation, we don't give it much thought. Jesus asked us to give up our own lives for others, and that is a hard thing to do in this culture, because we want something back for our efforts. I am guilty as well and speak of my own sin. I try to be like Jesus and I am trying to live as He would have me live by helping others. I can have a joyful heart when I am doing it for Him, (in fact have a hard time even caring if I don't) but if I want money or recognition it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. (so to speak)

why are the seven deadly sins so bad?!?!?
Q. ok, im not a christian, and i know the seven deadly sins, and heres a question, why are they so deadly? 1. Luxuria (later turned to lust) is it not wrong to live life to the fullest, and NOT think these thoughts? 2. Gula (gluttony) if you are not greedy, you will not survive, if you give everything away, you will suffer poverty, is there a way to live? 3.Avarita (greed) is there a difference between Gula and Avarita? 4. Acedia (Sloth) this is the only one of the sins i agree with, if you dont work for your pay/food, then you do not deserve to have it. 5. Ira (wrath) Isnt it proven that with-holding anger is bad for your health? and if you ventilate it in a healthy way, its still a sin!! 6. Invidia (envy) envy is something that is… [cont.]

A. All of the following are per my interpretation of the Christian faith (an appropriate context, since the question you asked is from Christian doctine). 1) the purpose of life is not for one's own fulfillment, but to further the fulfillment of the Lord. 2. (to answer #3 below) Gluttony is the wallowing in physical pleasure, at the expense of spiritual matters. It is also the sin of taking more than you need. and... 3. You make an error of logic. It doesn't say that one should give up everything, it merely says one should not be greedy and attempt to acquire everything. 4. But this is more than money...this is laziness of the spirit as well. 5. Instead, one could learn to rid one's self of anger. And don't throw me some cliche… [cont.]

Who Believes in The 7 "Deadly Sins"?
Q. Lust - is usually thought of as excessive thoughts or desires of a sexual nature. Gluttony - Derived from the Latin gluttire, meaning to gulp down or swallow, gluttony is the over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste. Greed - is, like lust and gluttony, a sin of excess. However, greed (as seen by the church) is applied to the acquisition of wealth in particular. St. Thomas Aquinas wrote that greed was "a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things. Sloth - More than other sins, the definition of sloth has changed considerably since its original inclusion among the seven deadly sins. In fact it was first called the sin of sadness or… [cont.]

A. those you mentioned are not the 7 deadly sins Many people fear a list of seven sins that God supposedly will not forgive. This list is known as the seven deadly sins. Is the idea of seven deadly sins biblical? Yes and no. Proverbs 6:16-19 declares, There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: (1) haughty eyes, (2) a lying tongue, (3) hands that shed innocent blood, (4) a heart that devises wicked schemes, (5) feet that are quick to rush into evil, (6) a false witness who pours out lies, and (7) a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. However, this list is not what most people understand as the seven deadly sins. Most people understand the list of the seven deadly sins to be pride, envy, gluttony, [cont.]

A. The Seven Deadly Sins, having come under recent scrutiny at the hands of the 1995 film, Se7en are: Gluttony Greed Sloth Lust Vanity Envy Wrath They are, though certainly sins that Scripture condemns, not to be found in Scripture in any such grouping. The seven sins originated in the writings of medieval theologues and have been remarked upon by such noted personages as Pope Gregory the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Geoffery Chaucer, and John Milton. Also of interest is a Scriptural list that bears at least some similarity to the historical list of seven. Proverbs 6:16-19 reveals: These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises… [cont.]
