A. Darwin claimed that organisms tend to evolve behaviors that are advantageous to their well being, while behaviors with no advantage or protective function will be selected against. Given this theory, evolutionary psychologists look for advantages in what have, until now, normally been considered problematic behaviors. One well known example is ADHD. It has been proposed that ADHD type behaviors were actually an advantage to ancient hunter-gatherers, and that advantage only faded when humans took up agriculture. Environmental psychologists have tried to find protective advantages in conditions like stress reactions, depression, anorexia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
